Paul Magnier sprinted to victory in the opening stage of the 2026 Giro d’Italia, which started in Nessebar and finished in Burgas, Bulgaria. The French rider from the Soudal team crossed the line first in the anticipated bunch sprint, overcoming pre-stage favorite Jonathan Milan. The win was heavily influenced by a massive crash inside the final kilometer, which took out many of the leading contenders.

This result determined the first wearer of the coveted Maglia Rosa. Magnier now leads the general classification, with Tobias Lund Andresen (+0:04) and Manuele Tarozzi (+0:04) completing the provisional podium.

Among Spanish riders, Diego Sevilla of Team Polti VisitMalta sits best placed in fifth overall. He also became the first holder of the mountains classification jersey. As expected, the main GC contenders did not fight for the stage win. Jonas Vingegaard, a key favorite, finished in 77th place, one spot behind fellow Spaniard Enric Mas. Italian hope Giulio Pellizzari ended the day in 148th, with all of them trailing by 10 seconds.
