**Loss to Freiburg**
SC Braga’s hopes of reaching the Europa League final came to a heartbreaking end on Thursday night. The Portuguese side suffered a 3-1 defeat away to Freiburg in the second leg of the semifinals, falling short of a spot in the UEFA competition’s showpiece event. This outcome was far from what manager Carlos Vicens had anticipated, especially after his team secured a 2-1 home victory in the first leg.
With the advantage in the tie, Braga faced a massive setback just six minutes into the match when Mario Dorgeles was shown a straight red card for a foul. Playing a man down, the visitors struggled immensely and soon conceded the opening goal, scored by Lukas Kübler in the 19th minute. Johan Manzambi doubled Freiburg’s lead in the 41st minute, and Kübler added his second of the night in the 72nd minute to make it 3-0.
Braga, the last Portuguese club remaining in European competition this season, did manage to pull one back through Pau Víctor in the 79th minute, briefly reigniting hopes of a comeback. However, it was too little, too late, and they were eliminated from the Europa League.
This defeat means SC Braga has missed out on a second-ever appearance in a European final. Their only previous final came in the 2010/11 season, when they eliminated Benfica in the semifinals before losing to FC Porto in the championship match. With Braga’s exit, Portugal now has no representatives left in any UEFA competition for the remainder of the season.
